Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program

To help reduce the number of fires and burn injuries caused by children experimenting with fire, the San Jose Fire Department offers a Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program. Our program is offered in two formats:

One-on-One Intervention

  • Children 10 years old and under and teenagers 15 to 17 years of age.
  • Intervention is provided by trained educators and firefighters.
  • To set up an intervention, contact the Public Education Office.

2-Day Workshop Intervention

  • Offenders 11 to 14 years old.
  • Comprehensive 2-day workshops that target at-risk youth, ages 11 to 14, who have expressed an interest in fire and/or have been involved in firesetting activities. The workshops will teach students important fire and life safety skills, encourage positive self-esteem, the importance of being responsible as well as how to make better choices. Parents or guardians are requested to attend the first 30 minutes of the program and assist his/her child with homework assignments. Student participation is a critical element to the success of this workshop. Unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated and assignments must be satisfactorily completed to receive course certificate. Students may want to bring a snack from home or snacks may also be purchased on-site during the break.
  • Please contact the SJFD Public Education Office at 277-2878 for more information.
